Your Guide to Excursions Near Darrel Paradise Resort

One of the best things about staying at Darrel Paradise Resort in Kabula, along the Bungoma–Mumias road, is how much there is to see within a short drive. Whether you're here for a weekend or basing a longer Kenyan itinerary around Bungoma County, here's our own rundown of the excursions guests ask us about most.

• Buteyo Miti Park (8 km) — A tranquil forested park close to Bungoma town, popular for short nature walks and picnics under indigenous tree cover.
• Mt Sangalo (9 km) — A local hill on the outskirts of Bungoma offering an easy climb and panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
• Mt. Elgon National Park (30 km) — An extinct shield volcano straddling the Kenya–Uganda border, home to elephants, buffalo, and the famous Kitum Cave system.
• Kakamega Forest National Reserve (42 km) — Kenya's last remnant of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest, rich in primates, birdlife, and rare butterflies.
• The Crying Stone of Ilesi (45 km) — A striking natural rock formation near Kakamega, said to resemble a human figure "weeping" as water trickles down its face.
• Impala Park, Kisumu (86 km) — A lakeside sanctuary in Kisumu combining wildlife viewing with sweeping views over Lake Victoria.

Further afield, Bungoma County is also home to Nabuyole Falls, the Elephants' Maternity Ward and Chepkitale Forest on the Mt. Elgon ecosystem, the Kaptama Viewpoint, the Chemoge High Altitude Training Camp, the Bukusu Cultural Centre, and several other cultural landmarks — Maeni Shrine, Chetambe Fort, Mwibale wa Mwanja, Mwikhupo Falls, and Kumfunje Bridge.
